Which years are Rat years?
Rat years include 1948, 1960, 1972, 1984, 1996, 2008, 2020; the next one is 2032. These are the popular zodiac dates, which change animal at Chinese New Year.
BaZi counts differently. The popular zodiac switches animal at Chinese New Year, which falls between 21 January and 20 February. BaZi switches at Li Chun (立春), the start of spring, which falls on 3, 4 or 5 February. If you were born in January or in the first weeks of February, your BaZi animal can be the neighbouring one, so confirm it with your chart. The people most affected were born in the gap between Li Chun and Chinese New Year: they carry one animal in the popular zodiac and another in BaZi.
Rat and the Goat: harm
Rat (Zi) and Goat (Wei) form a Six Harm (子未害). A harm does not break anything the way a clash does. It tends to show up as small frictions inside cooperation: a colleague who reads your message the wrong way, a promise that slips, a favour that each side remembers differently.
